MATHS CURRICULUM
Intent
Within our lessons we aim for pupils to enjoy mathematics and appreciate the fascination that Maths can hold. We encourage pupils to persevere in seeking solutions and appreciate the application and power of mathematics in other subject areas. We cultivate self- confidence, independence and an understanding of financial literacy.
Mastering mathematical skills is at the centre of everything we do.
At New Forest School, we aim for all our pupils to:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics, understanding the need for their future careers and life in today’s world.
- Reason clearly, setting arguments out in a logical manner and using correct Mathematical language.
- Approach and solve problems systematically, choosing appropriate techniques for their solutions.
- Confidently use and explore mathematical ideas, aiming for mastery and not just learning techniques.
- Obtain relevant qualifications at Entry Level, Functional Skills and GCSE.
Maths is the language of the universe.’(Neil deGrasse Tyson)
The study of Mathematics equips pupils with the knowledge to make sense of everyday situations, establish connections to real life context and forge links between different topics. Maths helps to foster curiosity, helping pupils develop various strategies to tackle problems; it empowers pupils with resilience to take chances, get things wrong and form a new plan to start over again. Pupils will gain a determination to drive towards reaching the final answers or a new challenge. Maths helps pupils to build better logical thinking, reasoning skills, financial understanding and problems solving. All adults and pupils will strive to foster the TREES values within Mathematics.

In Maths we all learn together to solve problems, develop skills and always aim to maintain positive interactions with those around us.
