LANGUAGES CURRICULUM
Intent
The aims and intent of languages at New Forest School are:
- To deliver a high quality Languages education which fosters students’ curiosity and enriches their understanding of the world.
- To take account of individual ability, experience and cultural background and ensure that all students have access to language learning.
- To enable students to express their ideas and thoughts in the target language (usually Spanish)
- To equip students to understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
- To develop student confidence, fluency and linguistic awareness in both Spanish and English
- To provide the foundation for learning further languages
- To promote literacy and numeracy across all teaching, where applicable.
Curriculum Time
Key Stage 3: Languages is delivered by subject specialists with the majority of students receiving 2 dedicated languages lesson per week.
Key Stage 4: All students who opt for languages receive 3 dedicated lessons per week, delivered by subject specialists.

Career Opportunities
Studying a foreign language can seem like a daunting process, but studying a European or other foreign language will be of great value when it comes to your employability. Languages are vital if you think you would like to live and work abroad.
Foreign languages are one of the ‘facilitating subjects’, highly regarded by many universities and helpful in all career areas.
It is particularly useful in international aid, the Armed Forces, the security services, politics, law, business and working as an interpreter or translator.
