ENGLISH CURRICULUM
Curriculum Intent
At New Forest School we believe that Literacy is a fundamental life skill. We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in our literacy lessons in order to meet the needs of all our students. Our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills, and understanding.
Our students have a range of abilities, which require suitable learning opportunities to enable them to succeed and progress. Speaking and listening activities are embedded throughout the curriculum.
ICT in literacy lessons is an integral part of the learning experience and specialist resources are available for students who often struggle with the written word.
Curriculum Time
Key Stage 3: English is delivered by subject specialists and given a high priority with the majority of students receiving 4 dedicated English lesson per week.
Key Stage 4: Students receive 4 dedicated English lessons, delivered by subject specialists. Bespoke 1:1 support and booster lessons are timetabled when required.

Qualifications
Depending on ability, students have the opportunity to undertake the following, nationally recognised, qualifications:
Entry Level Certificate in English: Level 1- Level 3
Functional Skills English: Level 1 – Level 2
GCSE Maths: Foundation or Higher
Resources
Classrooms used for English lessons benefit from access to computers, an interactive digital projector and students have access to iPads. The English classroom also incorporates a small library and reading corner.
Career Opportunities
Studying English is useful for all jobs as it helps you develop important analysis and written communication skills. Most employers always say they want people with good English skills.
If you enjoy English you could use your creative and analytical skills to work in a huge range of different career areas. If you are interested in the Arts and like reading, media, the theatre or events, there are lots of opportunities in broadcasting, publishing and arts management. If you like debating and putting together persuasive arguments you may enjoy law, politics and government or business roles. English combines well with all subjects.
