Outdoor Education

Summary of Department

Outdoor Education plays an important role in the curriculum and extra curricular life of all students at New Forest School.

All students at New Forest School benefit from a double lesson of Outdoor Education per week. Over the course of the year they participate in a very wide range of outdoor and adventurous activities including:

  • Climbing
  • Skiing
  • Snow Boarding
  • Kayaking
  • Canoeing
  • Sailing
  • Wind surfing
  • Mountain biking
  • Orienteering
  • Problem Solving
  • High and Low Ropes Courses
  • Geo-caching
  • Bushcraft
  • Camping Skills

The lessons link wherever relevant to the aspects of the academic curriculum, for example Geography with river studies, coastal processes, maps and local area study.

The lessons also contribute hugely to our delivery of SMSC and PSHE though team work, problem solving, communication.

All students can obtain accreditation within the various activities. Our teachers have devised a series of internal ‘starter’ awards which act as a stepping stone to nationally recognised awards from the various NGB’s (national governing bodies) for each activity.

Extra Curricular

In addition to the timetabled lessons, students are also able to attend extra curricular clubs in Outdoor Education. A new development within Outdoor Education is the provision of short residential trips for our students to Avon Tyrell Activity Centre.

New Forest School benefits from unparalleled access to a number of resources in the local area and its location on the edge of both the South Coast and the New Forest. We make use of Calshot Activities Centre, Avon Tyrell Activity Centre, Copthorne Woods (Bushcraft) and various locations throughout the New Forest to deliver Outdoor Education lessons.

We also have close links with Hythe Sailing Club which allows us to make use of their facilities on Southampton Water so our qualified Sailing Instructors can introduce students to dinghy sailing.

Progression Opportunities

Outdoor Education qualifications add value to any CV or application to further education, training or employment opportunities. In addition, they are the start point for progression to instructor qualifications in the various activities.
