ENGLISH
Qualification
Students study the Pearsons Edexcel Functional Skills Level 1/2 in English which comprises of three units/assessments:
Speaking & Listening
Learning Outcomes:
- Listen, understand and make relevant contributions to discussions with others in a range of contexts
- Apply their understanding of language to adapt delivery and content to suit audience and purpose
Reading
Learning Outcomes:
- Apply their understanding of language to adapt delivery and content to suit audience and purpose
- Read a range of different text types confidently and fluently, applying their knowledge and understanding of texts to their own writing
Writing
Learning Outcomes:
- Write texts of varying complexity, with accuracy, effectiveness, and correct spelling, punctuation and grammar
- Understand the situations when, and audiences for which, planning, drafting
Curriculum Time
All Post 16 students will receive a minimum of 3 hours per week dedicated to Functional Skills English.
In addition, lessons in other subjects will support the real world use of literacy skills key to the Function Skills curriculum.

Resources
The dedicated, spacious Post 16 Classrooms used for English lessons benefit from access to computers, an interactive digital projector. Additionally, students have access to iPads for specific lessons.
Career Opportunities
English a core subject and usually a key requirement for accessing further education colleges regardless of subjects studied. In addition, English is a key life skill for any career.
