ANIMAL CARE
Qualification
Students study the City & Guilds Level 1/2 in Animal Care. This qualification comprises of three core units:
Animal Welfare
Learning Outcomes:
- Monitor/maintain the health & well being of animals.
- Promote and maintain the welfare of animals.
- Common diseases and disorders.
- Animal first aid
Animal Feeding
Learning Outcomes:
- Select and prepare equipment & food to feed & water animals
- Provide feed and water to animals
- Monitor animals’ feeding and watering & maintain records.
Animal Accommodation
Learning Outcomes:
- Prepare and maintain animal housing
- Clean and prepare housing and bedding for animals
- Maintain animal housing
Curriculum Time
All Post 16 students spend a minimum of 1 day per week on the school farm.
This time is split between practical activities and required theory work.

Resources
Students have access to our school farm which boasts a dedicated classroom equipped with PC’s, an indoor practical classroom for animal handling and a vast array of small and medium size animals to ensure all practical elements of the qualification can be covered.
These include: insects, a snake, tortoises, guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, geese, pigs, donkeys, goats and alpacas.
Career Opportunities
A certificate or diploma in Animal Care or Animal Management is designed to help you find work with animals such as;
- Kennel/cattery worker
- Pet Store assistant
- Welfare charity worker
Once you’ve completed the Level 1 or 2 qualification you can move on to Level 2 or Level 3 Animal Care or Animal Management at a suitable Further Education college.
