GCSE Art & Design


GCSE Art and Design provides students with a wide range of creative, exciting and stimulating opportunities to explore their interests in ways that are both personally relevant and developmental in nature.

This two unit specification enables students to develop their ability to actively engage in the processes of Art and Design – to build creative skills through learning and doing, to develop imaginative and intuitive ways of working and develop knowledge and understanding of media, materials and technologies in historical and contemporary contexts, societies and cultures.


Assessment Objectives

    Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources.

Year 10

Component 1

Project Title: Coastal Environments

Using our visit to Lepe and Calshot as a starting point student will be considering the different qualities of environments at the coast.

Using a range of 2D materials to create drawings, paintings, collages and prints that reflect both the natural and man- made aspects of the coast line.

Students will create a series of experiments based on the work of other artists and their own gathered resources.

Component 1

Project Title: Coastal Environments

This term students will be developing their ideas and creating a final piece that reflect their explorations of the coast.

Their work will be connected to that of other artists and their earlier experiments and collected resources.

Their final piece will represent an aspect of manmade or natural coastline environments.

Component 1

Project Title: Coastal Environments

Students will be starting their second project that will lead in to Year 11.

Using sources gathered from a trip to Southampton and more local areas students will spend this term experimenting with a mixed media approach to 3D modelling. They will create both Marquette’s (preliminary experiments) and sculptural pieces. These will inform their ideas in year 11.

Year 11

Component 1

Project Title: Food and British Culture in Art.

Students will continue their studies on how food represents Britain’s culture. They will use the primary sources they gathered on their trip to Southampton in the Summer term to inform their ideas. Research and analysis will connect their ideas to artists and current affairs.

They will produce a variety of experimental pieces in both 2D and 3D materials.

This will be finished during the Spring term.

Component 2

Externally Set Task

Student will receive the exam paper and title early in the spring term (January)

They will have a 6-8-week preparation period where their teacher will guide them with their ideas on the theme. They will produce practical project that covers all assessment objectives and is fully developed in preparation for their final piece.

Their exam is a sustained period that equates to 10 hours. During the exam they will produce their final piece and submit their preparatory project.


GCSE Art & Design is a strong foundation for further progression to Art and Design related courses such as A-level Art and Design and enhanced vocational and career pathways.
