Our school farm was opened as a small, bespoke project for one student in 2012.

Since then it has grown and developed to a facility that is used by all students during their time with New Forest School. Students from Key stages 2, 3 and 4 all spend half a day per week at the farm while KS4 students who opt for Animal Management or Horticulture NVQ’s may have further lessons as part of their individual timetable.

OFSTED has recognised the contribution of school farms in raising standards, stating that a school farm “provides excellent opportunities for students’ personal development. For example, students learn the importance of routine and the need for commitment when caring for animals”

It also states that “the importance of the farm extends well beyond the bounds of the curriculum. It provides an opportunity outside lessons for those who wish to work in agriculture and horticulture, or even veterinary science, to practise the skills that will be required.”

School farms help deliver the outcomes of ‘Every Child Matters’:

  • Be healthy: taking part in farm activities helps with physical and mental health
  • Stay safe: working with equipment and animals enables thinking about safety issues in a supervised environment
  • Enjoy and achieve: pupils who find a classroom environment difficult can flourish with the hands-on learning approach of farms
  • Make a positive contribution: solving farm problems encourages positive and enterprising thinking. Pupils also gain confidence and self-esteem by taking responsibility for farm tasks, such as caring for animals
  • Achieve economic well-being: the highly structured nature of farm work, from animal welfare to growing food, provides varied experience in a genuine working environment.

Here at New Forest School we take pride in our school farm as it can bring so many benefits and positive effects on learning to our school, its teachers and students, and also the local community. These can include very positive developments to; attendance, behaviour, diet/nutrition, health/well-being, raising achievement, enterprise/economic well-being, inclusion, learning outside the classroom, skills for life, sustainability, self-esteem/confidence, relevant/applied learning and much more.
